„Prace Filologiczne” [Philological Studies], founded in 1884 by Antoni Adam Kryński, is the oldest philological journal in Poland, and is unique owing to its rich and long tradition and continuous editions throughout the years. Despite the fact that the journal was philological from the very beginning, linguistic issues have always prevailed. The periodical gathered the most outstanding Polish philologists (mainly linguists, to a lesser extent – literary scholars), and published papers by e.g. Jan Baudouin de Courtenay, Jan Karłowicz, Aleksander Brűckner, Władysław Nehring, Jan Bystroń, Stanisław Dobrzycki, Stanisław Pigoń, Julian Krzyżanowski, Ignacy Chrzanowski, Roman Pollak, Mirosław Zygmunt Łempicki, Wiktor Porzeziński, Stanisław Szober, Stanisław Słoński, Władysław Kuraszkiewicz, Zenon Klemensiewicz, Tadeusz Lehr-Spławiński, Zdzisław Stieber, Witold Doroszewski.

In 1963, when the publication of the journal was resumed, „Prace Filologiczne” became linguistically oriented. Nevertheless, the profile of the journal was constantly discussed at many occasions (e.g. 120^th anniversary of the journal), which is why in 2008 two independent series (the linguistic one and the literary one) came into being. Currently, the philological journal „Prace Filologiczne” is focused mainly on the Polish, Slavonic and general linguistics.
